If you think about it, there are 2 obvious teachers of children – adults (parents and teachers) and other children. But what you might not appreciate is that there is also a third. Many now accept that the physical learning environment is, in fact, the third teacher.
It’s widely agreed by some of the top performing international schools that a positive, structured learning environment, that is – one that is appropriately resourced, well designed, beautifully maintained and well organised – will affect what and how much a child learns.
The Right Physical Environment Can Transform Student Achievement
Although thoughtful lesson plans, individualised learning and the quality of teaching all promote achievement, the physical environment that a school provides is equally important.
The layout of the class space itself, air quality, acoustics, colours used on the walls, desks and chairs, technology levels, all support student learning at the highest level, along with positive engagement and enthusiasm. Why? If a student feels calm, relaxed, responsible for and inspired to work in their surroundings, they are more likely to listen, to try hard and to do their best.
Let’s Get Back To Basics
So what constitutes the perfect physical environment? From varied work floor plans, clutter-free learning zones, warm lighting and areas designated for play and creative displays, along with things like access to authentic materials and tools, schools must think through how they present and maintain their environment if they are to get the most out of their learners. Getting the mood and surroundings right, will also help students to understand and respect the wider global environment around them.
