Student Support in Secondary
Purpose
At AISPP, we believe that every student learns, grows and develops uniquely. Our goal is to provide students with opportunities to reach their full personal and academic potential. The Student Support Team provides services to students who need additional support. Students at AISPP may receive support in the classroom, in small groups or individually. Our school ensures support for equitable education, academic success and social outcomes.
Student Support Team (SST)
The SST in Secondary includes:
- Inclusion Teacher - supports students to access the curriculum and learning
- Languages Coordinator
- English Language Acquisition (ELA) Teachers
- Counsellor
- Secondary Assistant Principal
- Secondary Principal
Meetings
The SST team in Secondary meet every two weeks. The agenda for these meetings centre around students being supported by each member and any new referrals from teachers. Team members use Google Spaces to assign and track the completion of tasks. The SST students who are are experiencing any difficulties and, where appropriate, refer families to external specialists for further help and/or testing.

Roles

Inclusion Teacher
supports diagnosed and undiagnosed students by pushing into subject classes. Sometimes students will be withdrawn from a class to receive one-to-one support from the Inclusion Teacher. Students with diagnosed learning needs will be supported to access the curriculum through the implementation of an Individual Education Plan. The Inclusion Teacher monitors student academic progress and growth and will make recommendations for external assessment when a student has been identified as having specific needs which have not yet been diagnosed.

English Language Acquisition Teachers
support students who are still acquiring English as a language for academic purposes. These teachers not only teach the MYP English Language Acquisition classes but also push into other subjects to assist students to access the language in the curriculum and assessment tasks. The ELA teachers work collaboratively with classroom teachers to differentiate instruction and resources so students can access the curriculum. ELA teachers use WIDA and NWEA MAP to assess and monitor student progress and identify individual needs and intervention.

Counsellor
supports the socio-emotional wellbeing of all students. The Counsellor also runs educational sessions for parents and professional development sessions for teachers. The Counsellor is also the leader for child protection in the school and deals with any concerns about a child’s welfare with the division principals and Head of School. The Counsellor runs sessions for individuals and groups whenever needed.

Assistant Principal and Principal
support other members of the SST, students and parents. They will regularly meet with students and parents to address individual concerns or issues. They will identify any patterns and work with teachers to best support student learning and wellbeing.
